Legacy Giving Guide

The Mosby Foundation
A Gift That Keeps Saving Dogs—Forever

Why Leave a Legacy Gift?

When you include The Mosby Foundation in your will, trust, or estate plan, you ensure that dogs in crisis receive life-saving medical care for generations to come.

Your legacy gift means: - Dogs will continue to receive emergency surgery grants - Families fighting cancer in their beloved pets will get support - Spay/neuter assistance will prevent future suffering - The gap between what procedures cost and what we can give will shrink.

It costs nothing today, but creates a lasting impact forever.

Ways to Leave Your Legacy

  1. Bequest in Your Will or Trust (Most Common)
Include The Mosby Foundation in your will or revocable living trust.
    Three types of bequests:
Specific Bequest: Leave a specific dollar amount - Example: “I give $10,000 to The Mosby Foundation”
Percentage Bequest: Leave a percentage of your estate - Example: “I give 5% of my estate to The Mosby Foundation”
Residual Bequest: Leave the remainder after other gifts are distributed - Example: “I give the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to The Mosby Foundation”
    Sample Bequest Language:
“I give [dollar amount / percentage / remainder] to The Mosby Foundation, a nonprofit organization, EIN 20-1468817, located at PO Box 1978 Staunton VA 24402, to support its mission of providing medical care grants to dogs in need nationwide.”
Next Step: Share this language with your estate planning attorney.
  2. Beneficiary Designation (Simple & Tax-Smart)
Name The Mosby Foundation as a beneficiary of:
Retirement Accounts: - IRA (Traditional or Roth) - 401(k), 403(b), or other employer plans - Pension plans
Why this is smart: Retirement accounts can be heavily taxed when left to heirs (up to 37% federal + state taxes). When left to charity, they pass tax-free—meaning MORE goes to helping dogs!
Life Insurance: Name The Mosby Foundation as primary or secondary beneficiary - Or donate a paid-up policy you no longer need
Investment Accounts: Transfer-on-death (TOD) or payable-on-death (POD) designations
Next Step: Contact your plan administrator or insurance company to update your beneficiary designation form.
  3. Charitable Trusts (For Larger Estates)
Work with your financial advisor or estate attorney to establish:
Charitable Remainder Trust: You (or your heirs) receive income for life or a set period - Remainder goes to The Mosby Foundation - Provides immediate tax deduction
Charitable Lead Trust: The Mosby Foundation receives income for a set period - Remainder goes to your heirs - Reduces estate and gift taxes
Next Step: Consult with your estate planning professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to be wealthy to leave a legacy gift?
A: No! Every gift matters. Whether it’s $1,000 or $100,000, your legacy gift will help dogs in crisis.
Q: Can I still provide for my family?
A: Absolutely. Most legacy gifts are residual (after family is provided for) or a small percentage that doesn’t impact your family’s inheritance.
Q: Will my gift be tax-deductible?
A: Yes. Estate gifts to qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofits like The Mosby Foundation are deductible from your estate, potentially reducing estate taxes.
Q: Can I designate my gift for a specific purpose?
A: Yes. You can specify that your gift supports medical care grants, cancer treatment, spay/neuter programs, or the pet food pantry. We recommend including flexibility language in case needs change.
Q: What if I change my mind?
A: Gifts in your will or trust are revocable—you can change them anytime. Beneficiary designations can also be updated.
Q: Should I tell you about my planned gift?
A: It’s not required, but we’d love to know! It allows us to: - Thank you during your lifetime - Ensure your wishes are honored - Invite you to join our Legacy Circle (optional recognition)

The Impact of Your Legacy

Imagine:
A dog hit by a car needs $5,000 emergency surgery. His family can only afford $500. Today, we might contribute $300. Your legacy gift could allow us to give $2,000—or cover the entire procedure.
A senior dog needs $3,800 dental surgery to eat without pain. Today, we give $300. Your legacy gift could increase that to $1,000.

A family is fighting cancer in their beloved companion. Treatment costs $10,000. Today, we contribute $300. Your legacy gift could provide $2,000—giving that dog more time with the family who loves them.

This is the power of your legacy.
