A Patchwork Of Compassion
Berryville, VA
Patch, a Shepherd/Pitbull mix, was
having a tough day. One of his best friends, Beth, Jenn's daughter, had just
left for school. That prompted him to lie down on the floor and bawl like a
baby. The way Jenn Moye tells it, that's not unusual for Patch. read

A Little Bit Of Love
Goes A Long Way
Christiansburg, VA
Nobody wanted him. That was the
bottom line. Suffering with anxiety and depression most of his life, Lee
trusted no one. A misunderstanding with his boss caused him to lose his
job. His frustrated family simply did not know what to do with him, or
how to deal with him.
Cashing out his savings, Lee got in
his car and left his home state of Pennsylvania, drifting toward
Radford, Virginia. But he didn't leave by himself. There was only one
other he trusted implicitly and loved with all his heart, and that was
Little Bit, his dog, a Welsh-Corgi-Pitbull mix.

Living In The Lap Of Luxury
Syracuse, NY
Aaahh, the SUV! It's America's symbol for achievement, wealth and
prominence. But two neighbors in Syracuse, New York looked at an SUV and
saw something entirely different.
A young mixed breed dog about 10-12 weeks old was forced to live in
this luxury prison for an undetermined amount of time in cold November
weather. Karen found Willi as she was taking a walk. His head suddenly
popped up, turning it from side to side in a gesture of curiosity and
uncertainty.

Flash
– TN
An
SPCA in Tennessee needed help to have Flash the Basset Hound’s entropion
corrected. This is a painful
condition where the eyelids droop (even more than normal for a Basset
Hound), causing the eye to dry out. We
donated towards his surgery so he could be comfortable while waiting for a
forever home.
Mayson
Radford,
VA
Poor
Mayson suffered a severe trauma – probably hit by or dragged by a
vehicle. He sustained severe
damage to his back legs, where all the skin peeled off his feet.
His owner was unable to afford the cost of treating his wounds and
contacted The Mosby Foundation for help.
We provided some funds for his initial treatment and he is now
slowly improving.
Jill
Harrisonburg,
VA
Jill
was abandoned and taken in by a local business.
While waiting for a permanent home, Jill developed a lameness and
was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. She
needed surgery to relieve her pain, and The Mosby Foundation paid a
portion of her surgery fee. Jill
is now recovering and will soon be placed in her new home.
Sahara
Roaknoke,
VA
This
1 year old Boxer needed emergency surgery to correct an intestinal
obstruction. A week later,
she needed to have a second surgery after she developed a post-surgical
infection. Sahara’s doctors
approached The Mosby foundation for help, and we made a donation toward
her care. Sahara has made a full recovery and is back at home with her
family.
Queenie
Baton
Rouge, LA
This
girl was rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav.
While looking for a permanent home for her, the rescue group
requested assistance to treat her for heartworm infection.
The Mosby Foundation made a contribution toward her care and we
hope Queenie soon finds a forever home.
Gretel
Cabins, WV
This
3 month old Walker Hound mix puppy was found with her brother wandering on
a lonely country road. Both
puppies were accepted by The North Shore Animal League for their adoption
program, but little Gretel fell off a garden wall and broke her femur
before she could be transferred to NSAL.
The Mosby Foundation made a donation toward her surgery fee. Once
she has recovered, she will be transferred to NSAL and will be available
to join a loving forever home.
Molly
Pulaski, VA
This
poor little Pomeranian wandered into the home of an elderly woman on a
fixed income. She was unable
to find Molly’s previous owners and, with help from another group, she
was able to have Molly spayed. Unfortunately,
Molly had complications from her surgery and needed a second emergency
surgery to stop all the bleeding. We
contributed towards the cost of the second surgery, and Molly has now
recovered and is acting like a sweet little fluffball again.
Thor
NY
This
elderly Shepherd-Collie mix needed his teeth cleaned and he had a tumor in
his mouth that needed to be removed.
His owner contacted us for help and we made a contribution toward
his dental procedure and surgery. Thor's Mom works very hard cross-posting
and saving hundreds of dogs each year.
We were proud to be of some assistance to two such special beings!
22
Alleghany
Valley Hounds
Covington, VA
The
Mosby Foundation was contacted by Black & Tan Coonhound Rescue to help
with the vetting for 22 rescued dogs found chained and in deplorable
condition after their owner passed away. We gladly paid a portion towards
their vet care. Unfortunately,
one dog was diagnosed with rabies and the majority of the dogs were
destroyed. Fortunately, several remain in quarantine and so far do not
appear to have any symptoms. Not only did everyone involved with handling
the dogs need to have rabies shots, the staff at the clinic had fallen in
love with these dogs and was emotionally devastated.
Buttercup
Staunton, VA
A
year old Labrador mix, Buttercup developed severe lameness in her right
rear leg. Her veterinarian
diagnosed her with a torn cruciate ligament in her right knee and
dysplasia in her right hip. The vet explained that Buttercup needed to
have surgery to stabilize her knee. Buttercup’s
owner contacted the Mosby Foundation for help and we made a contribution
toward her care. Buttercup is back at home with her family while she recovers
from her surgery.
Little
Terrier
Blacksburg,
VA
This
little dog was roaming in the road and was hit by a car.
She was taken to a veterinary office by a Good Samaritan and needed
surgery for her injuries. The veterinary office contacted us for assistance and we made
a donation toward her care. She
had her surgery and was adopted by a new family several weeks later.
Maiya
Martinsburg,
WV
This
1 year old Pit Bull Terrier was rescued as a puppy from irresponsible
owners who intended to give her to a breeder of fighting dogs.
Luckily, a responsible owner adopted her.
When she injured her cruciate ligament in her left knee her owner
took her for surgery.
Unfortunately, the surgery was unsuccessful and needed to be
repeated a couple of months later.
She ended up with permanent nerve damage and severely decreased
function in her left rear leg.
When she injured the cruciate ligament in her right knee and needed
yet another surgery, Maiya’s owner contacted us and several other groups
for financial assistance.
The Mosby Foundation made a contribution toward her surgery fee.
When she recovers, Maiya will have 3 good legs to bounce around on.
Oreo
Crozet, VA
Poor
little Oreo, an older Jack Russell mix, had severe dental problems with
bleeding gums. His owner contacted us and we made a contribution towards
his surgery. He is back home,
happy and finally pain free.
Cloie
Quinlan, TX
This
Cocker Spaniel mix was rescued by a police officer who found her in a
cage at a school bus stop. The
dog was transferred to a private rescue group who had her evaluated by
their vet. Cloie was
diagnosed with “cherry” eye and severe “dry” eye.
Unfortunately, Cloie’s dry eye was not responding well to
medical treatment, and the vet advised referral to a veterinary eye
specialist. The eye
specialist performed surgery to correct the cherry eye and better
control the dry eye. The
Mosby Foundation contributed toward her surgeries and she is recovering
at the rescue facility while she awaits a forever home.
Update: Cloie has
been adopted by a wonderful family!
UPDATE: Thank you for your pledge and payment to KCAAP for Cloie's eye surgery. After a rough start, her eye finally began to heal and the surgery was deemed successful.
Last week we received an inquiry about adopting Cloie and the home sounded perfect. With joy and sadness, she went to her forever home. We loved her but a family, including 2 cats, can give her what we dreamed of for her.
Without the financial support and your personal guidance, this would not have happened.
Thank You!
Allan, Karen, & Cloie
Quinlan, Texas
(editors note: Cloie was in AKC Rescue, a wonderful rescue located in North
Texas)
Cash
southern VA
This
four month old Malamute puppy was taken to a shelter along with his
brother, and euthanasia was immediately authorized. Both were suffering from Parvovirus infection.
Luckily, Malamute Rescue found out and were able to pull and save
Cash, but sadly his brother died from the infection.
The Mosby Foundation made a donation towards his hospital care,
and this wonderful little boy now has a forever home.
Billy the
Kid
Springfield,
VA
This little Border Collie puppy had to have emergency surgery after he
ate a sock. His owner
called us for help, and we paid a portion of the surgery fee. Billy’s family is now very careful about where they leave
their socks!
Pooka
Charlottesville, VA
A Shepherd-Collie mix, Pooka was diagnosed with a liver shunt when he was
about eight months old. Pooka’s
owner treated him with medication and special diet from her vet and
started saving up for the major surgery that he would need to correct
the shunt. After six months
of saving, Pooka’s owner had him evaluated by the specialists who
would do the surgery. They
thought the surgery would be the less-complicated kind where the shunt
is outside the liver. Unfortunately,
during surgery they found the shunt was inside the liver and it turned
into a much more difficult surgery.
Pooka’s owner contacted us and asked for help in covering the
extra (unexpected) costs of the more complicated procedure.
The Mosby Foundation made a donation towards his care and Pooka
is now at home and starting to feel like a normal dog.
And greatly LOVED!
Coda
Blue Ridge, VA
A
two year old mixed breed, Coda became suddenly blind from an acute onset
of glaucoma. This disease
causes intense pain, and she needed to have surgery to remove both eyes,
so she could live a comfortable life.
The Mosby Foundation made a contribution toward the cost of
surgery, and Coda is now at home with her family and coping well with
her disability.
UPDATE: We wanted to thank you for helping with Coda's surgery. She is a wonderful 2 year old golden retriever mix that had glaucoma (unknown to us when we adopted her from Angels of Assisi last year) and needed to have both eyes removed to alleviate the pressure and the pain. Because of your help we were able to make this possible for her. We have a 20 month old baby girl, Bailee, with cerebral palsy. With her condition we have unexpected medical bills. Also because of the cerebral palsy, only my husband works and is on a small salary as a police officer, while I stay at home with Bailee and do her therapy with her and take her to her doctor's appointments. We would love for Coda to come help out in Blacksburg at the booth if she is allowed or for any other events we could attend. She is a wonderful dog and we are so thankful for your help so we could help her.
Thank you very much!!!

Maggie's Incredible
Journey Home
GOOCHLAND, VA
It
was cold, 15 degrees cold. But it wasn't just the temperature that had
Maggie shivering. Two traps, one on her front right paw, and one on her left
back paw, were sinking painfully deeper into her paws.
Still, she trudged on. Two
days away from the safety of her home, Maggie, an 18-month old Corgi-Lab
mix, refused to lie down and die. She not only walked with the traps
savagely gnawing into her flesh, Maggie dragged one of the stakes with her,
too.

Miracle Molly
STAUNTON, VA
So often you'll read in our newsletter tragic stories of abuse and
determined survival. But this time it's different. It's the kind of story
that catches in your throat. A tragedy, yes, but one only nature can create.
A house fire in Greenville, Virginia destroyed everything Sandy and Eddie
Smith owned, including three completely adored cats, Jasper, Gator and
Daisy. Firemen found their sweet Pit Bull, Molly, curled up in a heap,
singed, smoking and not responding. It was only when she moved a little they
realized she was alive.

JASMINE
CHURCHVILLE, VA
This
2 year old female Boxer got a surprising new lease on life when her owner
was evicted from the house where she was living.
The landlord found a very sick Jasmine, adopted her and had her
treated for parvovirus and a respiratory infection.
The Mosby Foundation helped to pay for part of her treatment, and
Jasmine is now doing well and LOVES her new family and her new life!
UPDATE:
I want to thank you and The Mosby Foundation for what you did for our
boxer Jasmine. She is such a
happy girl now and had it not been for your intervention she would not be
with us today. Thank you for
all the encouragement and long talks on the phone when we were in such a
panic as to whether we were going to be able to save her.
Thank you for your assistance with the vet bill, which was enormous
in view of the fact that she had Parvo and kennel cough when we finally
did get her. When she first
went to the vet she weighed 25 lbs (18 months old).
Jasmine now weighs 55 lbs which is her max weight.
She is in a loving environment with an older Golden that is slowly
making up with her. She has
behavior issues that we are working on, she takes long walks every day and
is such a joy for my husband and I.
My hat is off to you and all the
wonderful work that The Mosby Foundation does and thank you so much for
your support,
Karen G.

GINGER
WAYNESBORO, VA
Ginger,
a 4 month old Labrador-Beagle mix, was injured in an unknown accident.
Her owner rushed Ginger to an emergency clinic and found out she
had a broken leg in two places. We
agreed to help pay for the surgery to repair her broken leg and hope she
will recover nicely to live a long, healthy, happy life.
JANEY
SHEPERDSTOWN, WV
This
3 month old Lab mix puppy was taken from its family by Animal Control when
the family listed the puppy on Freecycle, because they could not afford
veterinary care for her broken leg. A
local rescue group took Janey to a veterinary orthopedic surgeon who
placed pins in the fractured leg. The
surgeon generously discounted his fee, and The Mosby Foundation helped to
pay some of the remaining balance. Janey
is recovering well and will soon be ready to join her NEW family in
Charleston, WV.
WILLOW
BLUFFTON,
SC
This
approximately 10 year old female Beagle was abandoned and taken in by the
local animal control. She was about to be euthanized when a rescue group responded
to a call for help. They took
her to a veterinarian for evaluation, who determined that she was healthy,
except for bad dental disease and severe eye disease.
A veterinary eye specialist determined that she was blind in both
eyes, and that removal of both eyes would be necessary to relieve her
pain. She had the eye
surgery, dental cleaning and was spayed.
The Mosby Foundation helped to cover a portion of these cost and is
so pleased to hear that Willow is getting along wonderfully well and is
very happy!
UPDATE:
Willow is just amazing! She will come into the middle of the living room
and flop down on her back, waving all four legs like a cockroach, and
start to howl -OOOW OOOW- and the puppies come running to play with her.
They all pile on her, one to a leg and she trashes them around. I will get
pictures of this act. In the yard she runs and never hits anything - she
follows other dogs and I suppose she can hear plus smell where they have
stepped. We have a blind diabetic dog coming in from Tennessee this month.
His owner is elderly, ill and unable to care for him so we are going to,
and he may go into our Seniors for Seniors program. He may be a good
companion for Willow, although she gets along so well with all the others
she is never lonesome. Willow THANKS AND BLESSES everyone who helped her!

HENRY
DUBLIN, VA
Animal Control picked up this young stray Terrier
mix alongside the road. Thinking he had been hit by a car, they took him
to a veterinarian, who took x-rays and found he had a bullet in his leg.
The Mosby Foundation helped to pay to have the injured leg amputated, and
Henry is now in a forever home and loving his new life!

BACH
SUMMERVILLE, GA
A
white Shepherd-Husky mix, this boy was turned into a shelter when his
previous owners needed to move and decided not to take Bach with them.
We provided sponsorship funds to get him transported out of the
shelter and into foster care.
BRIANNA
HARRISONBURG, VA
Brie's owner called us for help when she found that
this 8 year old Boxer would need hip surgery. Brianna had been rescued
from an abusive home 7 years ago, with a severe injury to one rear leg.
While she had managed well over the last 7 years, now her "good"
leg was so painful that she could barely walk. Brie's family had saved
enough to pay for more than half of surgery cost and The Mosby Foundation
contributed toward the remaining balance.
UPDATE:
We wanted to thank you for your kindness and support for our family!
Brianna had her surgery just over a week ago and is slowly recovering. She
spends the majority of her day sleeping but we understand healing will
take time. Again, we just wanted to let you know this surgery would not
have been possible without some very wonderful people out there. I just
can't begin to explain how much it has meant to me and my family. Thank
you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Forever Grateful

RESCUE
NEWNAN, GA
We
were contacted by a rescue organization that needed sponsorship to pull
this gorgeous dog, scheduled to be euthanized that day, out of a shelter
in Georgia.
Thought to be a rare Finnish Lapphund mix, we offered funding to
get Rescue out of the shelter, into foster care and treated for heartworm.
SIMBA
HERMITAGE, TN
We received a plea from a rescue organization in
Tennessee to help this 18 month old Chow mix, who was abandoned when his
owners moved out of their rental home and left the dog behind. While a
local rescue volunteer was attempting to erect a shelter for this pup, a
neighbor's dog climbed the fence and attacked Simba in his own backyard.
Simba suffered severe fractures of both bones in his right front leg. We
contributed toward the cost of surgery, and Simba is now in foster care,
while he waits for a forever home.
BUTCHIE
PULASKI, VA
A fantastic pit boy, who escaped euthanasia in a
Pulaski Co shelter FOUR times. He was so good they used him as the
"test dog" when testing dogs for compatibility with other dogs.
He was great with kids and scared of CATS. But his time was up! The Mosby
Foundation sent out an urgent e-mail to see if we could help find him a
rescue or a foster home. It worked! Butchie is now in a wonderful forever
home. You can see by his big ole smile he's now a happy, happy boy. We
love you Butchie!

UPDATE: THANK YOU so much for
featuring Harley in your newsletter. You cannot imagine how thrilled I was
to see Mr. Harley Jones peeking up on the front page of your newsletter!
Fortunately for Harley, he was adopted about two weeks ago. The family who
adopted him had previously adopted a dog with an amputated leg. Their
other dog is a senior and I think they are finding that Harley has a lot
more energy than their senior. I received an inquiry yesterday from a
family from Virginia Beach who saw Harley in the newsletter and was
interested in possibly adopting him. I have just sent them an e-mail
telling them that he was adopted. Thank you and The Mosby Foundation for
helping Harley. He is such a great dog.

BART
– MUNCIE, IN
Animal
Rescue sent out a plea for help with a male Alaskan Malamute who was
turned into a shelter in horrible shape.
He had severe demodectic mange, open sores all over his body, his
toes nails curled under, he had fleas, was loaded with roundworms and
hookworms, had a secondary skin infection and on top of all of this
tested positive for heartworm.
The most wonderful thing is that he has a wonderful temperament
and is very sweet and loving.
Bart has begun his numerous treatments and is handling everything
quite well so far. We've been told he is especially fond of Greenies!
Thank
you for your donation for Bart, our demodex mange Husky.
He had a 2nd skin scraping & we are heading in the
right direction.
While there were still lots of live mites, there were some dead
& dying mites.
He has another three-week treatment & then a 3rd
scraping.
Thank
you SO much for helping him!
Update:
He is doing so well!
His hair has almost all grown back and he has finally tested
negative for mange!
He has the sweetest personality, and he has blossomed with all of
the attention that he gets at ARF.
He deserves to be spoiled for the rest of his life!
Thank you so much for your generous donation!

it is for the dog who just found their perfect family.

For six days, Rosie suffered needlessly at the hands of a vet who did not think it was necessary to splint her leg, much less give her pain medication . Fortunately, rescue volunteers found Rosie and took her out of the pound and straight to a caring veterinarian’s office.

Daisy’s Spinning World—
Providence, Rhode Island
Flipping…twisting…twitching…spinning. A terrier mix, little Daisy’s body contorted uncontrollably on a stranger’s front porch. Thanks to a very kind animal control officer (ACO) who saw her as he was walking by, Daisy was taken to nearby Ocean State Veterinary Hospital in Rhode Island.

A Love Beyond Measure
I got the call, as I do so many others, asking for help for a beloved canine companion. Each call is special but this one clutched at my heart.
Bobby Adkins’ sister-in-law, Judy, was embarrassed when she spoke to me but I assured her that she was talking to an avid animal lover. She took a deep breath and then told me about her brother in-law’s adored canine companion, Tracey. “These two are inseparable, Carole,” she said, “and I mean inseparable. They eat together, walk together, watch TV together and,” she said in a hushed voice, “even sleep together.” I had to laugh and told her I was familiar firsthand with that kind of love.

Aggie
On a hot August day in the summer of 2005, the Louisa County Animal Control Department received an unusual report. A nine month old black Lab/Corgi mix was curled up in the middle of the road next to a dog that appeared dead from being struck by a car. When Animal Control reached the scene, they discovered the young dog left behind was blind and almost entirely deaf. But despite her disabilities, she was remarkably friendly and sweet, smiling broadly whenever she was petted.
2/14/06 - Aggie now has a wonderful FOREVER HOME!

Crystal’s Gift
Update: 11-06-2006
Crystal no longer needs a loving home! She has a forever home with her foster Mom, Cheryl. Thanks Cheryl.
Vicki Walter from Virginia Tech. called us September 12th to ask for help with a very sweet 11 month old Johnson American Bulldog (at least that’s what we were told) named Crystal. Vicki explained that the owner had released her pet to Tech. saying she couldn’t take care of her any more. The dog’s immediate appearance made that abundantly clear. Crystal staggered then collapsed and was barely responsive. Her coat, or what was left of it, was patchy and extremely thin.

Spotacus--Brave and Kind
As it happens in life, even those of us who consider ourselves caring and kind towards animals, will sometimes walk by an animal in dire circumstances. We have many reasons for doing so, perhaps the animal is frightened of people and won’t let us get near. Whatever the circumstance, the decision to leave such an animal will often tug hard at our hearts.

A veterinary hospital in Maryland called us for help after Animal
Control confiscated 12 dogs from a private home as part of a foreclosure
action. Several of the dogs had ear infections, skin infections and needed
their teeth cleaned. One of the Shitzus was so sick that it needed to be
euthanized, but the remaining dogs are being treated, turned over to
rescue, and being placed up for adoption into forever homes. The Mosby
Foundation helped to pay a portion of the costs.
We were contacted by a friend of Rocky’s owner.
She said the dog was chained outside and appeared to be very thin
and weak. By the time this
Border Collie Mix made it to the vet, he was so severely malnourished and
anemic from a severe flea infestation that the vet advised euthanasia.
The Mosby Foundation covered the cost of the euthanasia, and
Rocky’s owner was found guilty of animal cruelty.
Little Ginger fell off her owner’s lap and broke her right front leg.
The Mosby Foundation contributed toward the cost of surgery and she
is now happily back at home with her owner and feline friends.
An Animal Control Officer called us for assistance with this
approximately 6 year old Pit Bull. Sadie
had just given birth to a litter of puppies and needed to be treated for
her advanced heartworm disease before she could be spayed and adopted.
We paid for her heartworm treatment, and she is in foster care and
recovering nicely.
We were contacted by a Husky rescuer about this lovely dog in the
Rutherford County Shelter. We
paid the vetting fee so the rescue group could transport her into foster
care, while she awaits a forever home.
This little Pomeranian mix was rescued a year ago from her previous
neglectful owners who kept her chained outside.
When she became suddenly weak and wouldn’t eat, her new owner
took her to the vet. Emergency spay surgery was performed to remove her
infected uterus. The Mosby
Foundation helped to cover the cost of surgery, and we received a grateful
thank-you from her owner. She is so happy to have her back home and
healthy.
