Crystal’s Gift

Vicki Walter from Virginia Tech. called us September 12th to ask for help with a very sweet 11 month old Johnson American Bulldog (at least that’s what we were told) named Crystal. Vicki explained that the owner had released her pet to Tech. saying she couldn’t take care of her any more. The dog’s immediate appearance made that abundantly clear. Crystal staggered then collapsed and was barely responsive. Her coat, or what was left of it, was patchy and extremely thin.

When the veterinarians examined Crystal, their alarm grew. She wasn’t just sick, she was near death. Not only did Crystal have flea and hookworm infestation, she also had demodedtic mange, lifethreatening anemia, entropion (an inversion of all or part of the eye lid), facial swelling, corneal ulceration, a staff infection and her red blood count was practically non-existent--8 out of 40. She was given less than 24 hours to live.

Crystal was given an immediate blood transfusion as her first step toward recovery. But the staff was still not certain she would make it. Even with so little life left in her, Crystal’s sweet, gentle nature came shining through stealing the hearts of an entire medical staff. Imagine being so ill and still having love to share!

That loving nature kept an entire staff with her overnight in ICU checking on her. Medically, they knew her chances were slim but they could not give up on her. But the power of love is its own medicine. By morning, the miraculous happened. Crystal was wagging her tail and trying to eat.

She’s recovering beautifully thanks to the financial assistance of The Mosby Foundation, but needs just one more thing to make her life complete--a loving home. Crystal is up for adoption. Do you know anyone who would welcome such a gentle, loving soul into their home? Call her foster mom, Cheryl, at 540-230-8633, or The Mosby Foundation for further information. We’ll help to make their life complete, too
